Aetna is already said they were out in California (completely gone with individual policies outside the exchanges too)New York, Ohio and Maryland and they have not decided on these two states.  United almost has to participate in New York since they own and operate a subsidiary, Oxford Insurance with individual polices.

According to the article, Cigna only sold individual policies in 10 states.  I thought it was interesting too when not too long ago they pulled out of Pennsylvania for their headquarters and moved up with Aetna in Connecticut.  United has so many subsidiaries in so many different businesses it’simage hard to keep track of them, which struck me as a bit odd with all the folks worrying about controlling Microsoft in the news with their different divisions.  If anyone had their senses about them they should be looking this way as changes with health insurance will directly impact you more than anything that will happen at Microsoft, what a disruptive world we live in at times.  BD

When the health insurance marketplaces, previously known as exchanges, open for business next month, some major insurers will not be participating in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

UnitedHealthcare and Cigna, both publicly traded managed-care companies, will not be offering products through the exchanges. Aetna (NYSE: AET) has not yet decided what it will be doing in the two states, but the Connecticut-based health insurer has already opted not to participate in several states including New York, Ohio and Maryland.

Minneapolis-based UnitedHealthcare (NYSE: UNH) said in a prepared statement that the company “evaluated each exchange opportunity individually, starting with our ability to honor our commitments to our existing local customers, members and care providers. We will not be participating in the 2014 Pennsylvania exchange because we believe we have a robust off-exchange product offering for small business owners including defined contribution and self-insured health plans as well as a solid local and national provider network.”

He noted that Cigna currently sells policies in individual markets in 10 states which have large numbers of sole proprietorships. Neither Pennsylvania or New Jersey are on that list. Cigna will participate in exchanges in five of those states: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Tennessee and Texas.
